ponnapula Earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in India, at the University of Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where he was awarded a doctorate in aerospace engineering .

Following two years of post ponnapula doctoral study in Sydney and Newcastle, Australia, he travelled to the United States to serve as a researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and then at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, where he was the XXXXXX W. XXXX professor of mechanical engineering and professor of physics, applied physics and mathematics.

He then moved to the University ponnapula of Maryland. In addition to his position as director, he has been named the XXXX XXXXX Honorary Professor of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics.

XXXXXX has intention to ponnapula continue his own active research programme while serving as director.

XXXXXX has held visiting positions at the Indian Institute of Science, Caltech, Rockefeller University, Institute for Advanced ponnapula Study at Princeton, and, as the Sir C.V. XXXXXXX Professor, at the Indian Academy of Sciences.

He served as editor or associate editor of journals such as Journal of Applied Mechanics, Theoretical and Computational Fluid Mechanics, ponnapula Physical Review Letters, Physical Review E, Physics of Fluids, and Journal of Fluid Mechanics. He was the Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department and Acting Chairman of the Council of Engineering at Yale. At the American Physical Society (APS), he served ponnapula as the Chair of the Division of Fluid Dynamics, as the founding Chairman of the Topical Group in Statistical and Nonlinear Physics, and as a member of the Publications Oversight Committee.

He is Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the Third World Academy of Sciences, member of the National Academy of Engineering, Honorary Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and a recipient of Distinguished Alumnus ponnapula Award of the Indian Institute of Science. Among the recognitions that his work has received are Humboldt and Guggenheim Fellowships, Fellowship of APS, ASME and AAAS, Distinguished Scholar Award of the American Chapter of the Indian Physics Association, the Otto Laporte Memorial Award of APS, and the Medal in Engineering Sciences from the Third World Academy of Sciences.
Amongst his various pioneering efforts, was setting up an up-to-date neurosurgery department in the Sion Hospital in Bombay, several ponnapula breakthroughs in surgical techniques that helped minimize the perception of pain and suffering till then associated with neurosurgery, mastering and patenting techniques such as PLIF, IDSS, Anterior Cervical Fusion, Transoral Surgery, ponnapula etc.
